A butter croissant and a coffee in the heart of old Vienna served at a backer of tradition.
Did you know that the croissant, is in fact not a French invention but an Austrian one? Particularly, a Viennese one?
It was "invented" by Viennese backers after the defeat of the Turkish forces during the siege of Vienna in 1683, it was intended to be a practical joke about "eating the Ottoman crescent moon" - although the questionable Austrian humor got lost in time, their delicious creation found huge success in France, which exported it as a global trend, thus the natural confusion of origins. This is one of the many reasons why I love history, it's filled with heaps of little known secrets and mysteries that put things into perspective. |
